CW: Relates to the killings of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and Tony McDade.

We mourn the killings of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and Tony McDade. Our hearts break for them, for their families, and for their loved ones. And it is with even greater sadness that we acknowledge the longer list of individuals of which George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and Tony McDade are a part of. We condemn the officers responsible and those people and institutions who would support them, shield them from repercussions, or turn a blind eye to their actions.

We are a club that aims to support the voices of young playwrights and provide them with a platform from which to speak. It is our hope that the theatre we create can enact positive change and it is part of our mission to combat racism and anti-blackness on or off the stage.

We recognize that the history of theatre is intertwined with a history of racism and anti-blackness. Theatre has frequently been used as a vehicle to perpetuate anti-blackness. As theatre makers, we must take this time to recognize and acknowledge the history of our art. Although theaters and productions across the nation are, at the moment, on hold, we know that does not allow us to be complacent in our work and our mission to fight racism.

Black Lives Matter.

In solidarity,
The NOMADS Board, 2020-2021

NOMADS (New and Original Material Authored and Directed by Students) is a student theater group dedicated to workshopping and producing plays and musicals written by current Barnard and Columbia students. NOMADS has been presenting student-written dramas, comedies, musicals, multimedia, and interdisciplinary works since 2003, and many of our productions have gone on to be presented through professional festivals and theaters in New York City. We  provide the most dedicated student-artists a supportive and progressive space for the original development of expressive, imaginative, and challenging new theater.

Mainstage Productions

WordPlay Staged Readings Festival

NOMADS produces one show in The Glicker-Milstein Theatre at Barnard College each semester, which may take the form of a full-length play or musical, a festival of one-acts, or another main stage performance. This production gives student writers a chance to see their work fully realized, staged with a full cast of actors and the support of a director, designers, and other production team members.
Every semester NOMADS pairs 3-6 undergraduate writers with Columbia graduate student mentors to workshop one of their pieces to be presented in a festival of readings toward the end of the semester. WordPlay is a great opportunity for writers who are still in the process of developing or refining a piece.
