New and Original Material Authored and Directed by Students (NOMADS) is a student theater group dedicated to workshopping and producing plays and musicals written by current Barnard and Columbia students. NOMADS has been presenting student-written dramas, comedies, musicals, multimedia, and interdisciplinary works since 2003, and many of our productions have gone on to be presented through professional festivals and theaters in New York City. We provide the most dedicated student-artists a supportive and progressive space for the original development of expressive, imaginative, and challenging new theater.
What we do
Our primary goal is to support student playwrights on campus, allowing them to see their work come to life on stage with the collaborative support of a director, actors, and creative team members. NOMADS also strives to support an environment where all team members learn more about the challenges and unique opportunities of staging student-written theater, how to negotiate relationships within the team to work productively and creatively, and ultimately see their creation on stage and come away with valuable lessons in how to improve their craft moving forward.
How we do it
Each semester NOMADS produces one show in The Glicker-Milstein Theatre, which may take the form of a full-length play or musical, a festival of one-acts, or another main stage performance. This production gives student writers a chance to see their work fully realized, staged with a full cast of student actors and the support of student directors, designers, and other production team members.
Additionally, each semester we hold a program called WordPlay, which pairs undergraduate writers with graduate students in the Columbia playwriting and dramaturgy programs for an ongoing mentorship that culminates in a festival of readings. WordPlay is an opportunity for writers who are in the development process to expand or revise their work with the advice of graduate students in the field.
