Murder Between the Lines

Written by: Evan Smolin
Directed by: Chole Kok
Produced by: Alli Salwen & Kalina Ko

Turn on your gramophone and set your radio for a murder mystery radio play straight out of the 1930s! It’s a dark and stormy night. All seems normal, but something’s afoot! Renowned mystery author Margie Lockhart has invited six of her friends up to her house on an island in the middle of the Hudson River. They arrive expecting to consult with Margie over dinner on the plot of her latest book, but there’s a catch: they will be experiencing the mystery firsthand! Our group of detectives are suddenly in a race to solve the mystery by midnight, finding themselves wrapped up in riddles, ulterior motives, and, of course...murder!

Every semester NOMADS pairs 3-6 undergraduate writers with Columbia graduate student mentors to workshop a piece of their writing. It is a process mean to provide playwrights with resources, mentorship, and allocated time to work on their play. This process culminates in a staged reading of a 40-minute excerpt of those plays. This is that reading! Join us in celebrating these writers and listening their original works (or works-in-progress).

Lily Kepler and the Graveyard Shift

Written by: Sara Bell
Directed by: Caroline Itzoff

Produced by: Mario Garcia, Ruya Tazebay, and Emily Lord
1994, Half Moon Bay, California: Rosa Morales has been a ghost for nearly a century, stuck in limbo after killing a man to protect her wife. Lily Kepler is biding her time in her hometown until bigger things, and spends her nights working the graveyard shift at the town’s top (and only) country radio station. On the anniversary of Rosa’s damning mistake, she curses Lily with the ability to cause earthquakes, in hopes of freeing the evidence from where he’s buried in the cliffs. When Lily’s friends from high school and Rosa’s wife’s family converge on the ranch house for the evening, it becomes clear that making decisions for the people they love is hardly as simple as it seems, that leaving home isn’t as permanent as they’d like, and that sometimes the earth needs to shatter. Even the most supposedly new places have their ghosts
